Summary

RPM's fiscal Q1 2027 gross margin fell about 100 basis points on raw material inflation as Consumer organic sales turned positive, Construction Products declined and the EBITDA outlook was cut.

RPM International (RPM) reported fiscal 2027 first-quarter results for June through August 2026 on October 6, 2026, in its 10-Q and earnings release. Sales reached a first-quarter record, but the segments moved in different directions and raw material inflation began to pressure gross margin [1][2]. Earlier research on RPM focused on three questions: whether Consumer demand excluding acquisitions could stop shrinking, whether Construction Products volume could restore its margin, and whether price increases could hold gross margin. This quarter, Consumer organic growth turned positive, Construction Products turned to an organic decline, consolidated gross margin fell about 100 basis points year over year, and the company cut its full-year adjusted EBITDA growth outlook from 5% to 10% to the mid-single-digit range [1][2]. Taken together, RPM's growth is shifting toward Performance Coatings and Consumer, profit held up this quarter because of expense savings, and the full year still faces cost pressure.

RPM International is a specialty coatings and building materials company whose demand comes mainly from repair, renovation and maintenance of buildings and homes; its brands include Rust-Oleum, DAP, Tremco and Carboline [3]. The Construction Products and Performance Coatings segments sell roofing, flooring, protective coatings and other system products directly to contractors and industrial customers, while the Consumer segment sells through mass merchants and home improvement centers [1]. Starting in June 2026, Latin America businesses with about $143.1 million of annual sales moved into Performance Coatings, and prior-year figures were recast on the new basis [1][4].

Change 1: Pricing is not keeping up with inflation, and gross margin fell about 100 basis points

Consolidated gross margin fell to 41.3% from 42.3% a year earlier. The company attributed the decline to cost inflation, including tariff impacts, and warranty expenses, which pricing and procurement and manufacturing savings only partly offset [1]. For full fiscal 2026, gross margin was 41.4%, flat with the prior year [5]. This quarter's decline was concentrated in Construction Products and Performance Coatings, while Consumer gross margin was flat. According to the earnings call summary, the company raised its second-quarter raw material inflation expectation to 9% to 11% from 6% to 8% and expects inflation to outpace pricing for the year [6].

Lower expenses offset the gross margin decline for now. SG&A as a share of sales fell to 25.3% from 27.1%, including a $10.8 million gain on a facility sale and a $4.9 million earn-out fair value gain; excluding those items, the ratio still fell about 1.2 percentage points because of lower commissions, lower healthcare costs and restructuring savings [1]. Adjusted EBITDA was $405.5 million, up 4.5%, with the margin flat year over year [2].

Change 2: Consumer organic demand turned positive

Consumer segment sales were $726.7 million, up 5.3%, including 5.2% organic growth and only 0.3 percentage points from acquisitions [1]. In fiscal 2026, the segment's organic growth was -2.6% [7]. The company attributed the growth to shelf space wins, new products and pricing [2]. Segment pretax margin rose to 18.2% from 15.8%, but that figure includes the facility sale gain; the adjusted EBITDA margin was 20.2%, roughly flat with the prior year [1][2]. Organic demand has recovered, but the underlying margin improvement is limited.

Change 3: Construction Products turned to an organic decline

Construction Products segment sales were $859.2 million, up 0.8%, with a 1.7% organic decline; all of the growth came from acquisitions such as Kalzip [1]. In fiscal 2026, the segment's organic growth was 4.5%, the highest of the three segments [7]. Management attributed the decline to delayed healthcare and education projects and to raw material shortages that affected delivery of some products [2]. Segment pretax margin fell to 17.4% from 18.7%, including $4.4 million of bad debt expense and a $6.3 million warranty charge [1][2]. The company expects the segment to return to positive organic growth by the end of the fiscal year, and that expectation remains unverified [2].

New focus: Performance Coatings expansion in emerging markets

Performance Coatings, which earlier research did not track separately, was the fastest-growing segment this quarter. Sales were $629.7 million, up 10.2%, including 7.9% organic growth, and segment pretax margin rose to 17.0% from 15.2% [1]. The company said all emerging market regions grew revenue by more than 20% and attributed this to its Platform model of shared regional resources [2]. The company did not disclose the scope or size of those emerging markets.

Conclusion

The quarter shows that RPM International's sources of growth are shifting and that its profit conversion faces more cost pressure. Profit held up this quarter because of expense savings, part of which came from one-time gains, and the company expects gross margin pressure for the full year [6]. Cash generation remained solid: operating cash flow was $263.9 million, and total debt fell to $2.41 billion from $2.67 billion a year earlier [2]. The next tests are whether Consumer posts a second consecutive quarter of positive organic growth, whether the Construction Products decline narrows, and whether the second-quarter gross margin decline widens.
