PNC (PNC) Q3 2026 Earnings: Loans Beat Guidance, Net Interest Income Falls Short

Summary
PNC's Q3 2026 average loans rose 2.5%, above guidance, but net interest income grew only 2.4% versus 3%-3.5% guided and the margin slipped to 2.94%.
PNC's third-quarter 2026 earnings showed loan growth running ahead of company guidance while net interest income fell short of it. PNC released results for the quarter ended September 30 on October 15, 2026, through an 8-K earnings release, a financial supplement and an earnings call [1][2]. The research behind this update followed three questions: whether commercial loan growth would translate into matching net interest income, whether the fee decline after the capital markets peak would stay confined to that one line, and whether costs and credit costs could both step down after the systems conversion. The answers this quarter were weaker-than-guided interest conversion, a fee decline concentrated in capital markets, and lower costs alongside slightly weaker credit. PNC's operating model is unchanged, but each dollar of loans produced less net interest income than expected, and the cushion in credit and capital is narrowing.
PNC is a large US regional bank that funds itself mainly with deposits, lends to individuals and businesses, and provides treasury management, capital markets advisory and asset management services [3]. About 64% of third-quarter revenue came from net interest income, which is interest income minus interest paid on deposits and borrowings [1]. PNC completed its acquisition of FirstBank in January 2026 and finished the systems conversion in June [3].
Loan growth beat guidance, but net interest income missed
Average loan growth in the third quarter exceeded the top of PNC's guidance. Average loans were $372.2 billion, up 2.5% from the second quarter, against second-quarter guidance of 1% to 2%; commercial loans rose 4% while consumer loans fell 1% [1][4].
Net interest income grew less than guided. Third-quarter net interest income was $4.206 billion, up about 2.4% from the prior quarter, against guidance of 3% to 3.5%, and the net interest margin slipped from 2.96% to 2.94% [1][4]. Interest income on loans rose $201 million from the second quarter, but combined interest expense on deposits and borrowings rose $211 million, offsetting most of the gain [3].
Management attributed the gap to the timing and mix of loan growth. The CEO said half of the quarter's loan growth came in the final two weeks, too late to contribute interest in the quarter, and that higher-spread existing loans were paying down early [2]. The CFO said high-credit-quality, low-spread loans grew faster than expected and were the main reason the margin missed expectations [2]. On the funding side, the rate paid on interest-bearing deposits rose 7 basis points to 1.98%, and noninterest-bearing deposits fell from 23% to 22% of the total [1][2]. PNC did not quantify any of these explanations.
The result shows loan volume running stronger than expected while the quarter's conversion of loans into net interest income fell below the efficiency implied by guidance. Management expects fourth-quarter net interest income to rise about 4% from the third quarter, the net interest margin to reach 3% or above, and full-year net interest income to grow 15.5%; the CEO also said the margin is an outcome and that the forecast could change [2].
Fee decline concentrated in capital markets
The third-quarter fee decline came mainly from capital markets. Fee income was $2.142 billion, down 6% from the second quarter; capital markets and advisory revenue fell 25% to $433 million, compared with the company's earlier expectation of a decline of about 20%, and PNC attributed the decline to elevated second-quarter activity [1][4]. The other four fee categories combined were roughly flat with the second quarter [1]. Management expects capital markets revenue to rise about 15% in the fourth quarter and raised its full-year noninterest income growth outlook to about 10.5% [2].
Costs fell as guided while credit weakened slightly
Adjusted expenses declined as guided after the systems conversion. Excluding integration costs, third-quarter noninterest expense was $3.724 billion, down 3% from the prior quarter, mainly on lower compensation; integration costs were $36 million [1].
Credit metrics weakened slightly in the same quarter. Net loan charge-offs were $257 million, including $35 million from moving the student loan portfolio to held for sale; nonperforming loans rose 8% to about $2.2 billion, mainly from previously reserved commercial real estate office loans and one large commercial credit [1][2]. The provision for credit losses was $189 million, below net charge-offs, and the allowance for credit losses fell from 1.48% to 1.42% of total loans; PNC did not explain the decline [1].
Conclusion
The quarter showed PNC's loan growth running stronger than expected while its efficiency in converting that growth into interest income fell short. Lower costs filled the net interest income gap, and pretax, pre-provision earnings rose 1% from the prior quarter [1]. Loan growth pushed up risk-weighted assets, lowering the common equity tier 1 capital ratio to 9.8%, below PNC's 10% target [1][2]. None of management's explanations have been quantified, and the fee benefits that management links to low-spread loans did not show up this quarter. Whether fourth-quarter net interest income grows about 4%, whether the margin returns to 3% or above, and whether the allowance ratio keeps falling as nonperforming loans rise will set the direction of this assessment.
