Acuity (AYI) Q4 FY2026 Earnings: Intelligent Spaces Grows 16.6% Organically

Summary
Acuity's Intelligent Spaces sales rose 16.6% in fiscal Q4 2026 a year after the QSC deal, with margins up, while lighting was flat and memory costs loom for fiscal 2027.
Acuity (NYSE: AYI) reported fiscal Q4 2026 earnings on October 1, 2026, in an 8-K results release and an earnings call covering the quarter ended August 31, 2026, and the results confirm that its Acuity Intelligent Spaces (AIS) segment can keep growing at a mid-teens rate without help from acquisitions [1][2]. Earlier analysis focused on three questions: how fast AIS could grow once the QSC acquisition had been in the base for a full year, whether quotes held by lighting sales agents would convert into shipments, and whether lighting gross margin was held up by pricing and productivity or by the shrinkage of low-margin channels. This quarter, AIS sales grew 16.6% and its operating margin rose [1]. Lighting sales fell 0.4% year over year; the independent sales network returned to growth but did not lift the segment total above last year [1]. Lighting adjusted gross margin rose 50 basis points while low-margin channels kept shrinking, so the two explanations still cannot be fully separated [1][2]. Overall, Acuity's growth now depends more clearly on AIS, while the lighting business has stopped declining but is not yet growing.
Acuity is an Atlanta-based industrial technology company with two segments: Acuity Brands Lighting (ABL) and Acuity Intelligent Spaces (AIS). ABL sells luminaires into construction and renovation projects mainly through independent sales agents. AIS sells building controls and an audio, video and control platform to system integrators and earns a gross margin more than ten percentage points above lighting. On January 1, 2025, Acuity acquired the audio-video platform company QSC for $1.2 billion in cash and placed it in the AIS segment [3].
Progress: AIS keeps mid-teens growth after the QSC anniversary
AIS kept growing quickly one year after the acquisition. In fiscal Q4 2026, segment net sales were $297.6 million, up 16.6% from $255.2 million a year earlier [1]. The prior-year quarter already included QSC in full, and Acuity made no new acquisition payments in fiscal 2026, so this is like-for-like growth [1]. AIS also grew 14.9% in fiscal Q3, so two consecutive quarters show that growth did not fade as the acquisition effect dropped out [4].
AIS margins rose with scale. Adjusted gross margin was 61.2% in fiscal Q4, 200 basis points above the prior year; adjusted operating profit was $74.1 million, up 35.7%, for an adjusted operating margin of 24.9%, up 350 basis points [1]. GAAP gross margin was 65.6%, but that figure includes a one-time $13.1 million tariff refund that will not recur [1]. In fiscal Q3, the adjusted operating margin of 25.1% was also above the prior-year 23.6% [4].
This result changes Acuity's growth mix. Consolidated net sales rose $35.3 million in fiscal Q4, all from AIS, while ABL sales fell $3.7 million [1]. AIS now makes up about 24% of consolidated revenue, and consolidated adjusted gross margin rose 130 basis points to 50.2%; management attributed the improvement to AIS becoming a larger part of the company [1][2]. Attribution has limits: Acuity does not split building-controls revenue from QSC revenue, and its data-center controller business is described only qualitatively, as being "in the door with more and more hyperscalers," with no revenue figure [2].
Progress: memory cost pressure has not yet reached the income statement
Rising memory prices are the next test for AIS margins. In fiscal Q3, management said it would first secure supply and then cover margin dilution with dollars [5]. On this call, management said memory costs did not affect fiscal Q4 and are expected to start weighing on AIS gross margin late in fiscal Q1 2027, with an impact of about 200 basis points over the year [2]. Management expects AIS operating margin to be flat to slightly up and assumes low to mid-teen AIS sales growth in fiscal 2027 [2].
This approach protects gross profit dollars, but the gross margin percentage would still decline. If higher costs are passed through dollar for dollar, revenue and cost rise together, so gross profit can keep growing while the margin percentage is diluted. The next quarter should show whether gross profit dollars still grow and whether the operating margin holds at the prior-year level.
Conclusion
This report strengthens the view of Acuity's growth engine. AIS delivered two consecutive quarters of mid-teens like-for-like growth with rising margins, and it now drives most of the company's growth and its consolidated gross margin improvement [1][4]. Profit conversion remains uneven: consolidated adjusted operating profit rose only 3.4% in fiscal Q4 because ABL adjusted operating profit fell $13.8 million on technology investment, offsetting the gain at AIS [1][2]. On cash, full-year operating cash flow was $825.6 million; management attributed the increase to operating performance, tariff refunds and lower tax payments, and the last two will not recur [1][2]. Memory costs in the first half of fiscal 2027 will test whether dollar recovery can protect AIS profit, and the lighting business still has to show that stabilization can turn into growth [2].
