Summary

Shopify's Q3 2026 revenue rose 32% and gross profit 28%, in line with guidance, while operating expenses fell to 32.4% of revenue and loan losses eased to 3.2%.

Shopify (SHOP) reported third-quarter 2026 earnings on November 3, 2026 in an 8-K press release and a 10-Q: revenue and gross profit landed within company guidance, while the operating expense ratio and free cash flow margin came in better than guided [1][2]. Of the three questions that framed the quarter, payments-driven gross profit growth met guidance, with revenue up 32% and gross profit up 28% [1][3]. Subscription gross margin slipped to 79.1% on cloud and AI costs, a moderate decline [1]. Merchant lending losses did not offset operating leverage [1]. Overall, profit and cash conversion beat the plan, but part of the improvement came from lower payments-side losses and marketing spend shifted into the fourth quarter, and lending losses are still rising [2][4].

Shopify provides software for merchants worldwide to start and run their businesses, along with payments, lending and other financial services [5]. Revenue comes from two lines. Subscription solutions charge platform plan fees and carried a gross margin of about 79% in the third quarter. Merchant solutions consist mainly of Shopify Payments processing and currency conversion fees, carry a gross margin of about 38% and made up 78% of third-quarter revenue [1][2][5].

Lending growth did not erase Shopify's operating leverage

Shopify's operating expense ratio came in below company guidance, and it was the main reason profit beat expectations this quarter. Operating expenses were $1.213 billion, or 32.4% of revenue, against company guidance of 33%-34%, 34.0% in the second quarter and 36.8% a year earlier [1][3][6]. Operating income was $568 million, up 66% year over year, and operating margin rose from 12.1% to 15.2% [1]. Sales and marketing expense grew only 14%, while research and development expense grew 33% [2].

Shopify Capital kept growing, but losses and delinquencies did not accelerate this quarter. In the third quarter the company purchased $1.5 billion of loans and merchant cash advances (MCAs, which are repaid from a share of the merchant's future sales), and related interest and fee revenue was $96 million [2]. Transaction and loan losses were $120 million, or 3.2% of revenue, compared with 3.9% in the second quarter and 5.2% a year earlier [1][6]. Balances 30 to 179 days past due were 2.9% of the portfolio, slightly below 3.0% at the end of the second quarter [2][7].

Three limits apply to this improvement. The decline in losses came mainly from a $41 million year-over-year decrease in realized Shopify Payments losses, while lending-related losses still rose $14 million year over year [2]. Management said some marketing tests shifted spend from the third quarter into the fourth, and it did not disclose the amount [4]. Balances 180 or more days past due rose from 5.7% to 6.0%, and the allowance fell to 9.5% of gross loans, so losses on earlier originations are still building [2][7].

The profit improvement also turned into cash. Third-quarter free cash flow was $816 million, a 22% free cash flow margin, at the top of guidance [1][3]. Since April 2026, MCA cash flows have been presented in investing activities, which moved $30 million of net cash use out of operating cash flow this quarter; excluding that effect, the free cash flow margin was about 21% [1].

Growth met guidance as subscription margin kept slipping

Growth and gross profit came in as the company planned. Gross merchandise volume (GMV) was $119.1 billion, up 29% year over year [1][2]. Shopify Payments penetration was 68%, up 3 percentage points year over year; revenue grew 32% and gross profit grew 28%, while gross margin fell from 48.9% to 47.6% [1][2]. Merchant solutions gross margin was 38.5%, compared with 38.2% a year earlier, so the lower gross margin came mainly from revenue mix [1].

Subscription revenue kept growing at about 20%, but its gross margin declined again. Subscription solutions revenue was $836 million, up 20% year over year, and monthly recurring revenue (MRR) was $230 million, up 19% [1][2]. Cost of subscription solutions rose 37%, including a $40 million increase in infrastructure costs such as cloud hosting and LLM usage, and subscription gross margin fell from 81.7% a year earlier to 79.1% [1][2]. Management attributed the margin compression to AI spending on Sidekick and said cost per conversation fell 28%, but the lower unit cost has not yet offset total cost growth [4].

Conclusion

The third-quarter results strengthen the case for Shopify's profit and cash conversion, while its growth engine ran to plan. Operating income grew far faster than gross profit, which shows that operating leverage and stable credit losses more than covered the lower gross margin [1]. Whether marketing spend catches up, whether payments-side losses stay low and how balances 180 or more days past due are recovered will become clear only over the next one to two quarters. For the fourth quarter, the company guided to revenue growth at a low-thirties percentage rate, gross profit growth at a high-twenties percentage rate, operating expenses of 29% to 30% of revenue and a free cash flow margin consistent with the fourth quarter of 2025 [1]. If the expense ratio holds within guidance, delinquencies stop rising and subscription margin stabilizes, the improvement is more likely to last; if not, timing effects would account for a larger share of this quarter's result.
