IDEXX (IDXX) Q3 2026 Earnings: Record inVue Dx Placements Lift Consumables

Summary
IDEXX placed 1,904 inVue Dx analyzers in Q3 2026 as VetLab consumables grew 14.6% organically; the CoVet deal trimmed its full-year operating margin outlook.
IDEXX (IDXX) Q3 2026 earnings showed inVue Dx placements at a record pace and faster consumables growth, while an acquisition trimmed the full-year margin outlook. IDEXX Laboratories reported third-quarter 2026 results (quarter ended September 30) on November 2, 2026, through an 8-K earnings release, its 10-Q and the earnings call [1][2]. Three questions framed the quarter: whether diagnostics recurring revenue could keep growing about 10% while clinic visits fell, whether inVue Dx placements would turn into consumables revenue, and whether operating margin could still expand after added second-half investment. U.S. same-store clinical visits fell an estimated 1.8%, worse than the roughly 1.5% decline management had assumed, yet Companion Animal Group (CAG) Diagnostics recurring revenue grew 11.0% organically, and the company raised its full-year organic growth outlook for that line to 10.3%-11.0% [1][2]. IDEXX placed 1,904 inVue Dx analyzers and VetLab consumables grew 14.6% organically; margins in the existing business beat guidance, but the CoVet acquisition led the company to lower its full-year operating margin outlook to 32.1%-32.3% [1][2]. Overall, the growth engine looks stronger, while a return to margin expansion in 2027 remains unproven.
IDEXX is a leading pet diagnostics company, and its companion animal business generated about 92% of 2025 revenue [3]. The company places analyzers in veterinary clinics, often in exchange for multi-year consumables purchase commitments, and then sells consumables, rapid assay kits and reference laboratory services [3]. These recurring diagnostics revenues make up roughly 80% of company revenue [3].
Progress: record inVue Dx placements and consumables growth ahead of the installed base
IDEXX placed 1,904 inVue Dx analyzers in the third quarter, above the roughly 1,400 per quarter needed in the second half to reach the 5,500-unit full-year goal, and the installed base reached nearly 11,000 instruments [1][2]. Nearly half of the placements were international; total premium instrument placements were 5,780, including nearly 1,200 competitive and greenfield Catalyst placements [2]. Management said IDEXX will exceed both the full-year goal and the five-year goal of 20,000 placements [2].
The larger installed base is already converting into consumables revenue. VetLab consumables revenue was $443.2 million in the third quarter, up 14.6% organically, faster than 13.6% in the second quarter and faster than the 11% growth in the global premium instrument installed base [1]. The 10-Q attributes growth above the installed-base rate to more testing by existing customers, an expanded test menu and pricing [4]. The $55.4 million consumables increase accounted for about 60% of the increase in CAG Diagnostics recurring revenue [1].
Instrument revenue was flat, but there was no sign that IDEXX traded consumables discounts for placements. Instrument revenue grew 0.4% organically because higher placements were offset by lower price realization from placement programs, while CAG gross margin rose from 62.0% to 62.8% [1][4]. IDEXX does not disclose inVue Dx consumables revenue separately; it says annual recurring revenue per analyzer is within a $3,500-$5,500 range [2].
Change: underlying margins beat guidance, while CoVet lowers the full-year outlook
Margin gains in the existing business exceeded the company's prior guidance. Third-quarter gross margin was 62.9%, up 90 basis points year over year on a comparable basis; operating margin was 33.1%, up 60 basis points on a comparable basis, above the guided 20-50 basis points [1]. The 10-Q attributes the gross margin gain to mix benefits from consumables volume growth, operational productivity and net price [4].
The CoVet acquisition lowered the reported full-year margin outlook. CoVet provides an AI clinical assistant for veterinarians, has an annualized revenue run rate of about $20 million, and the acquisition closed on September 15 [2][4]. IDEXX cut its full-year operating margin outlook from 32.3%-32.5% to 32.1%-32.3%, including about 30 basis points of CoVet integration costs and one quarter of amortization, and guided to fourth-quarter operating margin of 28.4%-29.3% [1][2]. Because the acquisition impact is larger than the guidance cut, the margin outlook for the existing business did not deteriorate, although the company did not break out the specific costs.
Cash generation was stronger than the original guidance. Free cash flow for the first nine months was $977.6 million, about 105% of net income, and IDEXX raised its full-year free cash flow conversion outlook from 90%-100% to 95%-100% [1]. The company repurchased $805 million of stock in the first nine months [2].
Conclusion
The quarter strengthens the view of how IDEXX grows: even as clinic visits keep falling, testing frequency, new customers and roughly 4% net price are accelerating diagnostics recurring revenue, and new placements are turning into consumables revenue [2]. Profit and cash conversion in the existing business continued to improve, and the acquisition dilution is concentrated in the fourth quarter. The next report needs to show whether fourth-quarter recurring growth holds near 10%, whether full-year placements exceed 5,500, and whether 2027 guidance restores margin expansion after absorbing the acquisition. The visit data covers only a U.S. sample, and there is not yet any data on CoVet's effect on diagnostics utilization.
