Alphabet (GOOGL) AI Mode Passes 1 Billion Monthly Active Users

Summary
Alphabet merged AI Overviews and AI Mode into one Search experience, and AI Mode now tops 1 billion monthly active users, with the revenue impact still unsized.
On July 22, 2026, Alphabet Inc. (GOOGL) told analysts on its earnings call that AI Overviews and AI Mode have been brought together into one seamless Search experience, that AI Mode monthly active users have passed 1 billion, and that the feature is driving an incremental increase in search queries. The company still has not said how much search revenue those AI Mode monthly active users produce [1].
Where AI Overviews and AI Mode sit in Google's advertising business
Alphabet Inc. is Google's parent company, and its revenue comes mainly from advertising: a user types a question into the search box, advertisers bid for positions on the results page, and the company charges for impressions and clicks. Search is the entry point to that revenue line.
AI Overviews and AI Mode grow directly on that entry point. AI Overviews is a generated answer at the top of the results page that reads information scattered across multiple web pages, summarizes it, and attaches source links. AI Mode is a conversational search interface where a user can ask follow-up questions, compare prices, upload an image, or ask by voice. The people using both are ordinary internet users looking things up and comparing prices on Google every day. Because the feature occupies the search results page itself, it sits inside the company's most core business.
How the feature got here, from Search Labs to a merged experience
The path can be dated from the April 25, 2024 earnings call. Generative search had just started moving out of Search Labs and onto the main results page, and it was open only to more complex queries in the United States and the United Kingdom [2].
By February 2025, AI Overviews had reached more than 100 countries and Google had begun placing ads inside the answers, turning it from an experience feature into a slot that can be sold [3]. AI Mode then appeared as an extension of it, stretching a one-shot answer into a conversation that can be continued. In February 2026, Google integrated Gemini 3 into AI Mode and Search so that Search could dive deeper on the web and generate interactive interfaces [5]. By July 22, 2026, the two had been combined into a single search experience, and the company was still adding agents, personal intelligence and notebooks to it [1].
The scale number, and what it does not settle
The hardest number in this quarter's disclosure is scale: since AI Mode expanded globally in October 2025, monthly active users have surpassed 1 billion [1].
Google said that AI Mode, like AI Overviews, is driving an incremental increase in search queries overall, and that AI features in Search now send billions of clicks to websites every week. The incremental queries were not quantified, and the click figure is only an order of magnitude, which is not enough to judge whether the traffic websites receive from AI search has gone up or down [1].
This 1 billion figure and the 2 billion monthly AI Overviews users disclosed in July 2025 belong to two different products measured at two different points in time. They cannot be added together, and the company has not published a definition of a monthly active user or the regional composition behind the count [4].
Volume, price and cost, side by side
The relationship between this feature and "Google Search & other" advertising revenue only becomes visible when volume, price and cost are lined up together.
On volume, the company said in July 2025 that AI Overviews were driving over 10% more queries globally for the types of queries that show them [4]. In February 2026 it added that daily AI Mode queries per user in the United States had doubled since launch [5].
On price, there is only a qualitative comparison: monetization for AI Overviews overall runs at approximately the same rate as before [3].
On cost, machine costs for a generative response had fallen 80% by 2024 from when the feature first launched in Labs [2], and after the upgrade to Gemini 3 the cost of core AI responses came down by more than 30% again [6].
Search advertising monetizes per query. More queries at a cheaper cost per answer would, directionally, enlarge this revenue line while keeping the expense of serving those queries from rising in proportion.
The three pieces of evidence do not connect
The query lift covers only the query types that show AI Overviews, with no baseline and no stated statistical method. The claim that monetization held flat carries no number at all. And the two cost reductions are measured against different baselines, so they cannot be joined into a single cost curve.
What can be confirmed today
What is confirmed is a set of operating changes: AI answers cover more queries, users ask more of them, each answer costs less to produce, and by the company's own account advertising monetization efficiency has not dropped. That makes AI search look more like an amplifier for search advertising than a threat to it.
But Google has never attributed any specific portion of search revenue or profit to these two features, and management has said that the acceleration in Search was not due to a single driver but to many different parts of the business working well together [5]. Turning this from a direction into a number requires the company to move ads in AI Mode from testing into full rollout and to disclose a per-query monetization basis that is comparable with traditional search.
