Eaton (ETN) Q3 2026 Earnings: Orders and Backlog Lift Organic Growth to 19%

Summary
Eaton's Q3 2026 organic growth of 19% beat guidance as electrical backlog kept rising; free cash flow began paying down debt while Electrical Americas margins recovered to 29.8%.
Eaton's Q3 2026 earnings showed organic growth, segment margins and earnings per share all above company guidance. Eaton reported results for the third quarter of 2026 on November 3, 2026, through its 8-K earnings release, its 10-Q and its earnings call [1][2][3]. Earlier research followed three questions: whether electrical orders could support the 13.5%-15.5% organic growth guidance, whether Electrical Americas margins could return above 30%, and whether profits after the Boyd acquisition could cover financing costs and start reducing debt [4][5]. The quarter confirmed the first and third points. The second showed progress but did not reach the target. Overall, the growth base is broader, cash generation has started to come through, and margin repair still depends on the fourth quarter.
Eaton is a power management equipment company incorporated in Ireland. Its customers include data centers, utilities, commercial and industrial buildings, machinery makers and aerospace companies [6]. Eaton earns most of its money selling switchgear, switchboards, circuit breakers, UPS systems and prefabricated power enclosures, and its two electrical segments generated about 77% of third-quarter sales [2].
Orders still outpace shipments, and organic growth beat guidance
Third-quarter organic growth came in well above the range Eaton gave in July. Sales were $8.947 billion, up 28% year over year, with organic growth of 19% against guidance of 13.5%-15.5% [1][4]. Electrical Americas grew 22% organically, including 54% growth in data centers. Electrical Global grew 27% organically, and Boyd added another 31 percentage points [1][3].
Backlog kept rising even as shipments accelerated, which means growth did not rely on working down existing orders. Electrical Americas backlog was $15.993 billion at September 30, up 33% year over year and $818 million higher than at the end of June [2][7]. Trailing 12-month orders in that segment rose 39% organically, and Electrical Global backlog grew 77% organically [2]. Total company backlog was about $26.2 billion, with about 72% scheduled for delivery within 12 months [2].
This result improves visibility into revenue. Eaton raised its 2026 organic growth guidance from 11%-13% to 13%-15% [1][4]. Electrical Global growth by region comes only from the earnings call, and backlog deliveries can still be delayed.
Profit and cash flow after the acquisitions began paying down debt
Financing pressure from the acquisitions began to ease in the third quarter. Adjusted earnings per share were $3.68, 12 cents above the top of guidance and up 20% year over year, and Eaton raised full-year adjusted EPS guidance to $13.70-$13.80 [1][5]. Net interest expense was $198 million, roughly flat with the second quarter [1].
Boyd revenue is arriving faster than originally planned, and cash flow has started to go toward debt reduction. Boyd recorded cumulative sales of $1.058 billion from its March consolidation through September, with a segment margin of 24.3% [2]. Management raised Boyd's full-year revenue outlook to $1.9 billion, of which $1.6 billion will be in Eaton's reported results [3]. Third-quarter free cash flow was $1.034 billion. Commercial paper fell from $2.088 billion at the end of June to $1.592 billion, and total debt declined to $20.106 billion [1][2][8].
The timing window for the Mobility transaction widened slightly. The 10-Q now says the combination of Mobility with Dana is expected to close in the first four months of 2027, compared with the first quarter of 2027 previously, while the cash distribution of about $1.1 billion is unchanged [2][9]. That debt-repayment cash may arrive about a month later.
Electrical Americas margins recovered but stayed short of the target
Electrical Americas margins improved clearly but remained below 30%. The segment margin was 29.8% in the third quarter, up 230 basis points from the second quarter and 50 basis points lower than a year earlier [1][2]. The drag from commodity and wage inflation narrowed from 470 basis points in the second quarter to 250 basis points, and management said price-cost was positive on a dollar basis [2][7][3].
The size of the second-half improvement depends on the fourth quarter. In July, management said second-half margins would be 450-500 basis points above the first half; on this call it said only "over 400 basis points," without explicitly lowering the outlook [10][3]. Eaton finalized renegotiations with two large customers in October and announced general price increases effective January 2 [3].
Conclusion
Eaton's third-quarter report confirms that growth is broadening and that profits now cover the interest burden from the acquisitions. Orders and backlog are growing faster than shipments and support the raised full-year guidance. Segment margins of 25.3% beat guidance, but the core North American business is still recovering [1]. Free cash flow has started to repay commercial paper. The next tests are whether Electrical Americas margins reach about 31% in the fourth quarter, whether backlog stays above the September level, whether Boyd delivers $1.6 billion for the full year, and whether the Mobility transaction closes within the first four months of 2027.
