Corning Display Glass Price Increase: Who Pays the 15% Rise

Summary
Corning will lift yen-priced display glass 15% or more from Q4 2026, adding about 2% to LCD panel cost that BOE, TCL CSOT and HKC are passing to set makers.
DigiTimes reported Corning's display glass price increase on September 18, 2026: from the fourth quarter of 2026 Corning will raise its yen-denominated display glass substrate prices by 15% or more worldwide. That adds about 2% to LCD panel cost. BOE, TCL CSOT and HKC have already sent price letters to customers, so the pressure may land on the set makers that buy panels [1][2].
Corning cited the weak yen and higher raw-material, precious-metal, energy and logistics costs [1]. Sina Finance said the notice reached customers around September 11, and Chinese media carried it by September 15 [3][4]. Corning's previous standalone increase was 20%, effective in the third quarter of 2023 [5].
Panel makers moved first. TCL CSOT sent a TV panel price letter around September 10, BOE and HKC followed, and the increases phase in from September through the fourth quarter [6][7]. HKC's letter names glass substrates [7].
What display glass is and who makes it
An LCD panel is the image-forming screen in a TV or monitor. Its base is two sheets of very thin, very flat specialty glass carrying the circuitry and color filter: the glass substrate.
Three companies make most of it: Corning in the US, and AGC and Nippon Electric Glass in Japan. Panel makers cannot easily switch suppliers.
Glass substrates are about 15% of LCD panel cost [8]. A 15% glass rise adds about 2.25% to panel cost. Driver ICs, circuit boards and capacitors had already lifted panel bill-of-materials cost about 6% this year [6].
Set makers sit downstream. They buy panels and assemble TVs, monitors and commercial displays.
From glass to panels to set makers' gross margin
BOE, TCL CSOT and HKC together hold about 70% of LCD TV panel shipments, letting them pass cost down through price letters [6].
From September 11 to September 18 (five sessions), BOE (000725.SZ) rose 11.1%, TCL Technology (000100.SZ) rose 7.5%, HKC (001399.SZ) rose 19.2%, and Chinese glass maker Irico Display (600707.SH) rose 8.6% [9].
The next stop is set makers. Tencent News, citing industry views, said top brands have pricing power and scale and are hit relatively less, while small and mid-size makers selling tens of thousands to a few hundred thousand units a year may be squeezed further [8]. If a set maker cannot pass the panel increase on to retail, the difference falls on gross margin.
A second line runs through Corning's peers. AGC and Nippon Electric Glass face the same yen, energy and precious-metal costs, and both have revised prices since 2023 [10][11]. Neither has been reported matching Corning so far.
Companies that may be affected
For all five, the effect depends on whether the price letters stick and whether the Japanese peers follow.
KTC Technology (001308.SZ) is a contract manufacturer of monitors, TVs and commercial displays whose largest input is purchased LCD panels. Revenue in 2025 was CNY14.473 billion, about 95% of it from smart TVs, interactive displays and innovative displays; smart TV revenue was CNY7.873 billion at an 11.88% gross margin [12]. It lacks top brands' bargaining leverage, so fourth-quarter gross margin may come under pressure. The shares rose 3.1% over the same period [9].
Skyworth Group (00751.HK) is a TV brand that buys all of its panels. Revenue in 2025 was CNY70.32 billion, of which smart TVs were about CNY21.67 billion; attributable net profit fell 37.3% to CNY356 million [13]. On a thin profit base, panel cost that is not passed on may cut directly into attributable profit. The same report lists Skyworth among the top brands gaining share, so it may be hit less than smaller makers [8]. The shares fell 4.7% over the same period [9].
Nippon Electric Glass (5214.T) is one of the three major substrate makers. Fiscal 2025 net sales were JPY311.4 billion and operating profit JPY34.1 billion; Electronics & IT sales were JPY173.7 billion, about 80% of it display glass [10]. Its February outlook said display glass prices "are projected to remain stable" [10]. If it follows Corning, operating profit may benefit. No price change had been reported as of September 18, and the shares rose 2.2% over the period [9].
AGC (5201.T) is the No. 2 substrate maker. Fiscal 2025 Display sales were JPY184.7 billion, about 9% of group net sales of JPY2,058.8 billion [14][15]. In February 2025 management said Display profit was recovering through structural reform and "actively implementing pricing policies" [11]. Matching Corning may lift Electronics segment profit, but Display is a small share of the group. The shares fell 1.2% on September 18 [9].
Hisense Visual (600060.SH) is a TV brand with no panel maker of its own. In 2025 revenue was CNY57.68 billion, cost of revenue CNY48.04 billion and net income CNY2.45 billion [15]. Scale and a premium mix cushion it, so the pressure may be smaller than for the other two set makers. The shares fell 0.3% over the period [9].
How to check this
The first read is panel quotes in early and late October. TrendForce and CINNO currently view the price letters as a probe, not yet the start of a pricing cycle [16]. If October and November TV and monitor panel quotes turn up after a flat September, the letters have stuck.
The second read is third-quarter reporting in late October and early November: whether Corning quantifies the price action, and whether AGC or Nippon Electric Glass announces a match before their early-November results.
Set makers' gross margins will show in fourth-quarter 2026 results, reported from January to March 2027.
Four outcomes would break this chain. Fourth-quarter panel quotes stay flat or fall, leaving the cost with panel makers. AGC and Nippon Electric Glass do not follow, panel makers shift share to them and to Chinese glass, and Corning has to discount. Set makers' fourth-quarter gross margins hold flat, showing the rise reached retail. Or the three panel makers cut October utilization sharply, showing demand cannot carry a rise.
This only helps you find transmission chains you might have overlooked. It is not a stock recommendation.
