Summary

AMETEK Q3 2026 organic sales rose 10% as instrument orders converted to revenue, EMG margin hit 27.0%, and adjusted EPS of $2.21 beat guidance.

AMETEK (AME) reported third-quarter 2026 earnings on November 3, 2026, through an 8-K press release and its 10-Q for the quarter ended September 30. Results came in ahead of prior baselines, and the company raised its full-year guidance [1][2]. Going into the report, three questions mattered: whether orders piling up in the instruments business would turn into organic sales, whether margins in the electromechanical business could hold against tough comparisons, and whether the $5 billion Indicor acquisition would weigh on earnings [3][4]. All three were answered favorably, and adjusted EPS of $2.21 beat the quarterly guidance of $2.08-$2.10 [2][4]. Growth, profit conversion and cash generation all improved, but most of the guidance raise came from the existing businesses, and Indicor's payoff will not be testable until the fourth quarter [5].

AMETEK is an industrial technology company based in Pennsylvania [6]. Its Electronic Instruments Group (EIG) generates about two-thirds of sales, selling analytical and measurement instruments to petrochemical, semiconductor and power customers. Its Electromechanical Group (EMG) sells components and repair services to medical device, defense, aerospace and automation customers. Customers order against capital projects or production schedules, and AMETEK recognizes revenue as it ships, so orders accumulate first as backlog [6].

EIG orders are converting into revenue faster

EIG organic sales grew 9% in the third quarter, up from 7% in the second quarter, showing that earlier orders are turning into revenue [2][3]. Company orders reached $2.65 billion, with organic orders up 17%, and the book-to-bill ratio was about 1.19. Backlog reached $4.54 billion at September 30, up from $4.11 billion at June 30 [2][3].

Management attributed the order growth to customer capital projects moving from the quotation stage to firm orders, rather than to deferred maintenance purchases, which rules out customers pulling orders forward [5]. Management also said about 80% of the backlog can ship within the next 12 months, and it raised full-year organic growth guidance from mid-to-high single digits to high single digits [5]. One caveat remains: the September backlog includes an undisclosed amount brought in by Indicor, and 18 percentage points of order growth came from acquisitions, so the increase excluding acquisitions cannot be verified [2].

EMG margins kept expanding against a high base

EMG organic sales grew 13% in the third quarter, and its GAAP operating margin reached 27.0%, above 25.4% a year earlier and 26.2% in the second quarter [2][3]. EMG operating income was $210 million, up 28.2%, faster than its 20.4% sales growth, and the adjusted core margin expanded 210 basis points to 27.5% [1][2].

The margin expansion came from volume, productivity and pricing. The 10-Q credits higher sales and Operational Excellence initiatives, and management added that price increases exceeded inflation of about 3%, with core incremental margins above 35% [2][5]. The split among the three is not disclosed, and EMG did not report organic order growth this quarter, so there is no leading indicator for future volume. Management's full-year target is about 100 basis points of margin expansion [5].

Indicor did not dilute earnings in its first quarter

Indicor closed on August 26 and added about $100 million of revenue in roughly five weeks, consistent with the company's figure of about $350 million in 2026 sales contribution [5][7]. AMETEK raised its full-year adjusted EPS guidance from $8.20-$8.30 to $8.53-$8.57, and the new range includes Indicor [1].

Most of the guidance raise came from the existing businesses. Management said Indicor contributes about $0.08 to 2026 EPS, mostly in the fourth quarter, well below the $0.30 increase at the midpoint of guidance [5]. Indicor integration costs of $9.8 million reduced the operating margin by 40 basis points, and transaction costs added another $18.1 million. Interest expense rose to $39.8 million from $22.5 million a year earlier, even though the new borrowings carried interest for only about five weeks [2]. Total debt, net was $6.67 billion at September 30, and third-quarter free cash flow was $527 million, or 124% of net income [1][2]. Indicor's own margin and the interest rate on the new borrowings remain undisclosed.

Conclusion

The third quarter strengthened the case for AMETEK's growth, profit conversion and cash generation. Core operating margin expanded 110 basis points, and the company raised its full-year free cash flow conversion guidance to 115%-120% of net income [1][5]. Cash from the existing businesses is the main source for repaying the acquisition debt. The company guided fourth-quarter adjusted EPS to $2.26-$2.30, and Indicor's first full quarter of revenue, interest and year-end debt will test the deal's return [1]. Organic order growth slowed from 25% in the second quarter to 17%, so whether orders keep outpacing shipments on a higher base is the next piece of evidence on durability [2][3].
